James Patterson was born on the 22nd March in 1947, which was a Saturday. For those readers interested in all things astrological, that means he is an Aries, which is a Fire sign.
James was born 50 miles north of New York City in a little place called Newburgh, population around 28,000. New York state in the United States of America is on the eastern seaboard, where North America meets the Atlantic Ocean. His parents were a teacher and an insurance broker, so he had quite humble beginnings. James is the eldest of four children – he has three younger sisters. At some point, the family moved to Boston, Massachusetts, which is where James went to high school and were he first started writing stories.
To pay for his college, James worked on the night shift at a psychiatric hospital. Working nights gave him plenty of time to read, though it was more ‘literature’ than commercial fiction that he chose. James graduated from Manhattan College with a B.A. in English. He had the chance to study for a Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee which would have made him a college professor, but he chose instead to drop-out.
