He wrote standalone novels and a considerable number of short stories, plus successful series such as the Tiger Mann series and the Caleb York series. However, Mickey's greatest creation is detective Mike Hammer, a hard-drinking, tough-talking private eye from the hard-boiled school of detecting. Some of the novels being set in the time period they were, Hammer was as likely to mow down communists with a machine gun as he was to take out crooks with a punch.
