Emily Kimelman Biography

Though the date is unknown, Emily Kimelman was born in Philadelphia (commonly known as Philly), which having a population of over 1.5 million people, is the largest city in the state of Pennsylvania, is on the eastern side of the United States of America, and is probably most famous for being the home of the Liberty Bell – unless you're a sports fan that is, in which case it would be either the Philadelphia Eagles (football), the Philadelphia Flyers (hockey), the Philadelphia Phillies (baseball), or the Philadelphia 76ers (basketball). Emily has both a younger and an older brother.

Emily’s father was a journalist for the Philadelphia Inquirer so his profession meant the family moved around. Even though Emily had only just come into the world, just weeks after she was born, the family moved to Texas, where she lived for two years.

Next stop: Russia. Emily lived in Moscow for around four years, so was brought up to be bilingual, learning both English and Russian, though she struggled with both. Why that was, at the time, was something of a mystery.

When she was six years old, Emily and her family left Russia and moved back to Philadelphia where it was discovered that she suffered from sever dyslexia. Luckily, they lived near to the remarkable Benchmark School in the town of Media, which caters for special needs children who require specialist help for them to reach their full potential. It has state of the art equipment and massive resources, for example, a 20,000 volume library, so as it only has a very small student body, it can provide the expert education such children need.

Emily’s educational program was intense, but it had to be if she was ever going to learn how to read properly. And she got no break at home – her father would read to her every night, taking selections from such as The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and Encyclopedia Brown.
