Jack Higgins was born on the 27th of July in 1929, which was a Saturday. For those readers interested in all things astrological, that makes him a Leo, which is one of the Fire signs.
Jack was born in Newcastle (or to give it its full title, Newcastle upon Tyne), a town just a few miles away for the North Sea in the North of England and a place renowned for hard men with thick accents who refuse to wear coats even when the temperature plummets. After being abandoned by the man of the house, who was a Scottish bookmaker, Jack's mother took Jack to live in her home town of Belfast, Northern Ireland (another place renowned for hard men with thick accents). They lived on Shankill Road, which to anyone how lived through "The Troubles" (a quaint name for the violent struggle between the Catholic community and the Protestant one), will likely recall images of fire bombings, shootings, and murders.
To little Jack, however, this was a time of wonder. So much so that he learned to read at just three years old. When he was old enough, he attended Nettlefield Primary School in Belfast. Even as a child he encountered the violence for which the area was infamous - he witnessed a bomb thrown into a cinema audience and gunmen opening fire on a tram on which he was riding…
